Background

Possibilities, Inc. invites you to discover a unique group of people working together to create positive community transformations in greater Oklahoma City and beyond.  Strong businesses, families and schools within safe neighborhoods create thriving urban communities.   Since 1995, Possibilities has built local initiatives and facilitated citizen-managed projects from within challenged communities.  Addressing issues such as poverty, isolation, dependency, struggling schools, crime and deterioration, Possibilities work is critical for a vibrant City.  Possibilities engages citizens at the grassroots level to leverage the power of cooperation, creativity and community.

Possibilities work achieves lasting improvements in peoples’ lives, rather than quick fixes dependent on outside assistance.  Possibilities could not create permanent community transformations or accomplish our mission alone. Possibilities teaches skills that develop local leadership and strengthen the ability of citizens to solve their own problems. Possibilities community work achieves physical, social and economic improvements-- ultimately improving quality of life.  Possibilities is recognized as a model program by Tufts University among only 31 acclaimed sustainable communities initiatives across the nation, and was recognized in 2009 as a ONE Award finalist by the Oklahoma Center for Nonprofits.

Possibilities works where invited, primarily within the inner city of Oklahoma City in low to moderate income areas. Possibilities supports present and past program participants’ efforts in their neighborhoods, schools, houses of faith and/or business districts on an ongoing basis.  With Possibilities’ support, those groups carry out community projects that benefit more than 50,000 people each year.  Possibilities core program is the annual, yearlong Possibilities Innovation Program, Engaging and Transforming Communities from WithinPossibilities is a United Way partner agency.

Possibilities Approach:

Possibilities partners with people to help them identify their own hopes and dreams, and then provides training and technical assistance to make those dreams a reality.  As a result, participants determine the nature of the community change initiatives and the direction of Possibilities’ work.

Possibilities tackles the issues of community decline with a unique and innovative approach.  Possibilities:

  • Looks to local solutions for the problems faced, rather than relying on outside experts. Possibilities listens to how local people define both their needs and their vision for their community.
  • Takes a long-term approach, instead of focusing on short-term fixes.  Possibilities' work permanently improves the social, economic and physical resources available within a community.
  • Helps people gain the skills to work together for lasting change, rather than giving away food or material aid. The result is self-reliance, rather than dependence on external aid.
  • Teaches partners to create their own vision for their community, resulting in greater community involvement and longer-term impact.
  • Promotes understanding and embraces conflict that arises from differences.  The program brings people of different social, economic, racial and generational backgrounds together to experience a truly inclusive community that openly addresses issues of power and privilege.
